Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. It is characterized by airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and reversible airflow obstruction, leading to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. The symptom frequency and intensity may vary considerably over time. It is also linked to immune system responses to allergens and irritants, highlighting the complex...

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Asthma: Pathogenesis and Management

Asthma is a chronic pulmonary condition involving inflammation of the airways, hyper-reactivity, and reversible obstruction of the airways. This condition can significantly impact a person's quality of life, making breathing difficult and leading to distressing symptoms.
Asthma is classified as allergic and non-allergic. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander trigger allergic asthma, while factors like cold air, intense emotions, or exercise can induce non-allergic asthma.

COPD: Management Using Bronchodilators and Corticosteroids

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...
Asthma III: Clinical Manifestations01:13

Asthma III: Clinical Manifestations

Asthma presents with a characteristic pattern of episodic respiratory symptoms that reflect underlying airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus hypersecretion. Although severity varies among individuals, certain clinical manifestations are considered hallmarks of the disorder and often guide diagnosis and assessment.Respiratory SymptomsA persistent cough is one of the most common early features of asthma. It is frequently dry and tends to worsen at night or in the early morning,...

Summary

Asthmatic patients with a repressive coping style tend to use fewer emotion-focused coping strategies. The use of denial, an emotion-focused strategy, was linked to increased emergency room visits for asthma exacerbations.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Medicine
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Coping styles influence health outcomes in chronic conditions.
  • Repressive coping, characterized by low anxiety and high social desirability, is prevalent in chronic illness populations.
  • Understanding coping mechanisms in asthma is crucial for managing morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of repressive and other coping styles in adult asthmatic patients.
  • To assess the predictive capacity of these coping styles on asthma-related morbidity over a 12-month period.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 75 adult asthmatic patients was assessed for sociodemographics, asthma severity, and illness perception.
  • Repressive coping style was identified using the Trait Anxiety Inventory and Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale.
  • Coping styles were measured using the dispositional version of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-four percent of asthmatic patients were identified as repressors.
  • Repressors reported significantly lower use of Emotion-Focused Coping compared to non-repressors.
  • Higher use of Denial, an Emotion-Focused strategy, predicted 8% of the variance in emergency room visits.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of repressive coping in asthma is comparable to other chronic conditions.
  • Repressive coping is associated with lower reported use of certain coping strategies.
  • Emotion-Focused Coping, particularly Denial, may be linked to poorer asthma clinical outcomes and increased healthcare utilization.
