Summary

Fixed partial dentures did not negatively impact hypermobile abutment teeth with reduced periodontal attachment over 24 months. This suggests that these dental prostheses can be a stable treatment option for patients with compromised periodontal support.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Periodontology
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Hypermobile teeth with reduced periodontal attachment pose treatment challenges.
  • Fixed partial dentures (FPDs) are a common restorative option.
  • The stability of FPDs on compromised teeth requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of 3- or 4-unit fixed partial dentures on hypermobile abutment teeth with reduced periodontal attachment.
  • To compare outcomes between abutment teeth and control teeth over 24 months.

Main Methods:

  • Adult subjects with hypermobile abutment teeth and reduced periodontal attachment were selected.
  • One abutment tooth and one control tooth (same type, similar periodontal condition) were chosen per subject.
  • Treatment involved periodontal therapy followed by FPD placement.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A quarterly maintenance schedule was implemented for all subjects.
  • Main Results:

    • No statistically significant differences were observed in key dependent variables between abutment and control teeth at baseline and 24 months.
    • Measures for all dependent variables remained consistent at test and control sites throughout the study period.

    Conclusions:

    • Fixed partial dentures do not adversely affect hypermobile abutment teeth with significantly reduced periodontal attachment.
    • FPDs appear to be a stable and viable treatment option in the context of compromised periodontal support over a 24-month period.
