Researchers isolated four compounds from Solanum lyratum, including three novel 4-hydroxyisoflavans. These compounds demonstrated significant in vitro anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting beta-glucuronidase release.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Pharmacology
- Medicinal Plant Research
Background:
- Solanum lyratum is a plant with a history of traditional medicinal use.
- Isoflavans are a class of compounds known for diverse biological activities.
- Inflammation is a key factor in many diseases, necessitating the search for novel anti-inflammatory agents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new compounds from Solanum lyratum.
- To evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of isolated compounds.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation of Solanum lyratum whole plant.
- Structure elucidation using detailed physical data analyses (e.g., NMR, MS).
- In vitro anti-inflammatory assay measuring beta-glucuronidase release from rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
Main Results:
- Three new 4-hydroxyisoflavans (lyratin A, B, and C) and one known isoflavan were isolated.
- All four compounds exhibited anti-inflammatory activity.
- Inhibitory ratios of beta-glucuronidase release ranged from 30.3% to 38.6% at 10 microM concentration.
Conclusions:
- Solanum lyratum is a source of novel 4-hydroxyisoflavans.
- The isolated compounds possess significant in vitro anti-inflammatory properties.
- These findings support the ethnobotanical use of Solanum lyratum and suggest potential for developing new anti-inflammatory drugs.
