Background:

  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Ocular inflammation is a known complication of Crohn's disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify risk factors for ocular inflammation in Crohn's disease patients.
  • To compare patients with Crohn's disease and ocular inflammation to those without.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 19 patients with Crohn's disease and ocular inflammation.
  • Comparison with 93 Crohn's disease patients without ocular inflammation.
  • Analysis of bowel involvement site and joint symptoms.

Main Results:

  • Patients with colitis/ileocolitis had higher rates of ocular inflammation (23.9%) vs. small bowel involvement (2.8%).
  • Patients with arthritis/arthralgia had higher rates of ocular inflammation (29.4%) vs. no joint involvement (6.6%).
  • Increased bowel activity correlated with episcleritis, not uveitis or scleritis.

Conclusions:

  • The site of bowel involvement (colitis/ileocolitis) is a risk factor for ocular inflammation in Crohn's disease.
  • Arthritis or arthralgia increases the risk of ocular inflammation in Crohn's disease patients.
