Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy01:18

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

    Area of Science:

    • Optoelectronics
    • Optical Engineering

    Background:

    • Traditional optical heads for disk systems are often bulky and complex.
    • Integrating multiple optical functions into a single component can reduce size and cost.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a small-size, lightweight optical head for optical disk systems.
    • To integrate essential optical functions using a holographic optical element (HOE).

    Main Methods:

    • Designed a compact optical head utilizing a holographic optical element (HOE).
    • The HOE consolidates beam splitting, focusing error detection, and tracking error detection.
    • Implemented a new optical configuration to mitigate light source wavelength variations.

    Main Results:

    • The developed optical head comprises only four optical elements.
    • The HOE successfully performs beam splitting, focusing error detection, and tracking error detection.
    • Reduced offset signal in tracking error detection, enhancing operational stability.

    Conclusions:

    • A highly integrated, small, and lightweight optical head has been successfully developed.
    • The use of HOE significantly simplifies optical head design for disk systems.
    • The new configuration improves stability by minimizing wavelength variation effects.
