Summary

Age does not affect the breathing response to low oxygen levels (hypoxia). Both younger and older adults show similar initial breathing increases followed by declines, indicating age is not a factor in this physiological response.

Background:

  • The ventilatory response to sustained isocapnic hypoxia in young adults involves an initial increase in ventilation followed by a decline.
  • Previous studies suggested older adults might have diminished ventilatory responses to hypoxia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the ventilatory response to 25 minutes of isocapnic hypoxia between older and younger adults.
  • To determine if age influences the pattern and magnitude of ventilatory adaptation during hypoxia.

Main Methods:

  • 14 older adults (mean age 62) and 15 younger adults (mean age 29) were studied.
  • Subjects were exposed to 25 minutes of isocapnic hypoxia (SaO2 = 80%).
  • Ventilatory responses, including ventilation and tidal volume, were measured. The effect of hyperoxia after hypoxia and room air breathing was also assessed.
