Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of annual testing in reducing defective ultrasound transducers to an acceptable level.
  • To assess the current incidence of transducer defects after one year of routine clinical use.

Main Methods:

  • 299 ultrasound transducers from 13 clinics across five hospitals were tested using the Sonora FirstCall Test System.
  • Transducers were previously tested and deemed operational one year prior to this study.
  • Data on transducer errors, handling practices, and clinic types were collected.

Main Results:

  • A significant 27.1% of tested transducers were found to be defective after one year.
  • The most prevalent defects were delamination of the ultrasound lens and cable breaks (82.7% of all errors).
  • Radiology clinics exhibited the highest error rate (36.0%), and transducer handling significantly impacted defect rates.

Conclusions:

  • Annual testing alone is inadequate for maintaining acceptable levels of functional ultrasound transducers.
  • Implementing user routines that minimize transducer handling is strongly advised to reduce defect incidence.
