Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Reproductive Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta partially or totally covers the cervix.
  • Risk factors for placenta previa require further investigation to inform preventative strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between maternal smoking and the risk of developing placenta previa.
  • To quantify the risk of placenta previa among smokers compared to non-smokers.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed using Washington State birth certificate data from 1984-1987.
  • The study included 598 cases of placenta previa and 2,422 randomly selected controls.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Maternal smoking was found to be a significant risk factor for placenta previa.
  • Adjusting for maternal age, smoking approximately doubled the risk of placenta previa (OR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.7-2.5).

Conclusions:

  • Maternal smoking is independently associated with an increased risk of placenta previa.
  • These findings highlight the importance of smoking cessation during pregnancy to reduce adverse obstetric outcomes.
