Group Polarization01:01

Group Polarization

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.
Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy01:26

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

Phase-Contrast Microscopes
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

New cube polarizers offer wide angular field performance for semiconductor lasers. These optical devices achieve high transmission for p-polarized light and low transmission for s-polarized light over a broad angular range.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • MacNeille cube polarizers are effective but have limited angular fields.
    • High insertion losses for p-polarized light occur beyond +/-2 degrees.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To design improved cube polarizers with wider angular field performance.
    • To maintain high transmission for p-polarized light and low for s-polarized light.

    Main Methods:

    • Design of specialized coating structures using optical considerations.
    • Calculation of layer thickness based on substrate and material indices.
    • Determination of prism angle for symmetric angular field.

    Main Results:

    • Cube polarizers achieve wide angular ranges (e.g., +/-10 degrees in air) with T(p)>0.97 and T(s)<=10(-3).
    • Measured performance shows T(p) ~0.95 and T(s) ~10(-4) over +/-5 degrees.
    • Reduced spectral range compared to traditional MacNeille cubes.

    Conclusions:

    • The designed cube polarizers are suitable for semiconductor lasers due to their wide angular acceptance.
    • These polarizers can be used without collimating lenses, accommodating large beam divergence.
    • The new design offers a practical solution for high-performance polarization in laser systems.
