Summary

Ciprofloxacin effectively treated chronic bacterial prostatitis in men unresponsive to other antibiotics. Long-term follow-up showed pathogen eradication and clinical cure in many patients, highlighting its therapeutic potential.

Background:

  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis is challenging to treat.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate ciprofloxacin efficacy in treating chronic bacterial prostatitis.
  • To assess long-term outcomes and pathogen eradication.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted: Study 1 (17 men) used 500 mg ciprofloxacin twice daily for 2 weeks.
  • Study 2 (16 men) used 500 mg ciprofloxacin twice daily for 4 weeks.
  • Patients had prior treatment failures with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, or norfloxacin.

Main Results:

  • Study 1: Eradication of Escherichia coli in 7/10 and other pathogens in 2/5 cases.
