Background:

  • Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) is a common issue causing discomfort for workers.
  • Existing preventive measures for OIHD lack clear evidence of effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate interventions aimed at preventing OIHD in individuals with occupations posing skin risks.
  • To assess the efficacy of barrier creams, moisturisers, gloves, and educational programs.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a systematic search of multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to May 2010.
  • Included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing various preventive strategies for OIHD.
  • Data extraction and assessment were performed independently by two authors.

Main Results:

  • Four RCTs with 894 participants were analyzed. One large trial on print/dye workers showed a non-significant reduction in OIHD with barrier creams (39.9% vs. 45%).
  • A trial with metal workers indicated fewer OIHD cases with emollients/barrier creams, but without statistical significance.
  • A study on cleaners/kitchen workers found no OIHD cases with moisturiser use, compared to 20.4% in the control group. A hairdresser trial reported no OIHD with barrier cream use.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence for most OIHD preventive interventions is insufficient due to small, low-quality studies.
  • While some interventions showed positive trends, statistical significance was not consistently reached.
  • Larger, well-designed RCTs are required across various occupational settings to establish effective prevention strategies.
