Summary

Reducing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) supplies from 8 to 4 weeks significantly lowered smoking cessation success rates in a state quitline study. This highlights the importance of adequate NRT duration for effective smoking cessation.

  • This study evaluated the impact of reduced NRT supply duration on smoking abstinence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare 7-day smoking abstinence rates in light to moderate smokers receiving 4 weeks vs. 8 weeks of NRT from a state quitline.
  • To assess the impact of reduced NRT supply on heavy smokers as a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A study of 1,710 Colorado QuitLine enrollees who requested NRT.
  • Comparison of abstinence rates between light/moderate smokers receiving 8-week vs. 4-week NRT supplies.
  • Heavy smokers receiving 8-week NRT served as a nonequivalent control group.

Main Results:

  • Abstinence rates declined by nearly 25% among light to moderate smokers under the 4-week NRT protocol (29.9% vs. 39.3%, p < .01).
  • No significant difference in abstinence rates was observed for heavy smokers (28.6% vs. 28.4%, p = nonsignificant).

Conclusions:

  • Reducing NRT supply from 8 to 4 weeks significantly decreased smoking abstinence rates in a state quitline.
  • Further research is needed to experimentally determine the cost-effectiveness of 4-week vs. 8-week NRT protocols in quitlines.
  • Investigating factors like expectancies regarding NRT and cessation may elucidate mediating or moderating effects.
