Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Existing methods for measuring homework completion in therapy are often basic.
  • There is a lack of specific tools to evaluate homework in Behavioral Activation (BA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an observer-based coding system for characterizing and completing homework assignments in BA.
  • To create a reliable and user-friendly measure for therapists to use during sessions.

Main Methods:

  • A scale was developed to capture assignment type, functioning realm, completion extent, and difficulty.
  • Two coders assessed homework assignments from 12 clients in BA trials for treatment-resistant depression.
  • Inter-coder reliability was assessed, and unreliable codes were removed.

Main Results:

  • Coders achieved acceptable reliability for most proposed codes.
  • Correlations between homework completion and treatment outcomes were significant, supporting construct validity.
  • The refined scale offers a more sophisticated measure of BA homework.

Conclusions:

  • The developed observer-based coding system is a reliable tool for assessing BA homework.
  • This measure has the potential to enhance the understanding and application of BA therapy.
  • Further research can refine this user-friendly tool for clinical practice.
