Background:

Extraosseous osteosarcoma (EOO) is a rare malignancy arising from soft tissues, lacking skeletal involvement.
The rarity of EOO presents challenges in defining its clinical characteristics and optimal therapeutic strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the clinical features and treatment outcomes of patients diagnosed with extraosseous osteosarcoma.
To evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment modalities in managing EOO.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of ten patients with pathologically confirmed EOO between January 1999 and June 2008.
Review of patient data including anatomical distribution, surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

Main Results:

EOO occurred in various locations, including extremities, breast, lung, cheek, and retroperitoneum.
Patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy alongside curative resection showed improved survival rates compared to those with surgery alone.
The median survival time for all patients was 11.1 months, with most deaths resulting from disease recurrence.

Conclusions:

Extraosseous osteosarcoma behaves as an aggressive soft tissue sarcoma requiring multimodality treatment.
Further investigation is needed to clarify the specific impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on EOO patient survival.
