Summary
Sheath and catheter-associated thrombi are common during left-sided ablation procedures. Aspiration is presented as an alternative management technique for firmly attached thrombi, even with adequate anticoagulation.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Devices
- Echocardiography
Background:
- Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) use in left-sided ablation increases identification of sheath- and catheter-associated thrombi.
- These thrombi occur in approximately 10% of cases, despite adequate anticoagulation protocols.
Observation:
- Thrombi formation is a recognized complication during left-sided ablation procedures.
- Current management involves withdrawing the sheath and catheter if thrombi are firmly attached.
Findings:
- This case report introduces aspiration as an alternative management strategy for sheath- and catheter-associated thrombi.
- Aspiration offers a novel approach for managing firmly attached thrombi where withdrawal may be challenging.
Implications:
- Aspiration may provide a valuable alternative to sheath/catheter withdrawal for managing intracardiac thrombi.
- Further research is warranted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of aspiration in diverse clinical scenarios.
- This technique could potentially reduce procedural complications and improve patient outcomes.
