Summary

Pit bull injuries in children are a significant concern, with these dogs more likely to inflict unprovoked bites than other breeds. Pet safety education for families with young children is recommended to prevent future dog bite incidents.

Background:

  • A perceived increase in pit bull-related injuries prompted this investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively study epidemiologic characteristics of dog bite injuries in children.
  • To identify risk factors associated with severe dog bites, particularly those involving pit bulls.

  • Prospective study of 168 children presenting with dog bite injuries to a major children's hospital.
  • Data collection included patient demographics, injury details, and circumstances of the bite.
  • Breed identification and analysis of provocation and animal containment status.
