It was already known that lipids in the outermost layer of the skin play a central role in maintaining skin barrier function. However, no prior work had resolved how these lipid compositions vary among individuals with healthy skin. While eczematous conditions are associated with lipid imbalances, limited data exist on lipid composition in healthy skin.
