Summary

Serum hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) levels are higher in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients and correlate with liver fibrosis. However, HGF levels do not effectively monitor treatment response in CHC patients.

Background:

  • Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a cytokine involved in liver regeneration and fibrosis.
  • Serum HGF levels can indicate liver damage and dysfunction in various liver diseases.
  • Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is a significant global health concern with complex disease progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum HGF levels in patients with CHC.
  • To analyze the correlation between HGF and biochemical, histological, and virological parameters in CHC.
  • To assess HGF's utility in monitoring treatment response in CHC.

Main Methods:

  • Serum HGF concentration was measured using ELISA in 45 CHC patients.
  • Correlations were analyzed between HGF levels and liver necroinflammatory/fibrosis scores, liver function tests, and viral load.
  • HGF levels were also examined in a subgroup undergoing antiviral therapy.

Main Results:

  • Serum HGF concentrations were significantly elevated in CHC patients compared to healthy controls.
  • Higher HGF levels were associated with significant liver fibrosis (F ≥ 2), older age, lower platelet count, and elevated AST and GGT.
  • Multivariate analysis identified HGF as an independent predictor of significant fibrosis, with performance comparable to existing non-invasive markers.

Conclusions:

  • Serum HGF concentration is a valuable biomarker correlating with liver fibrosis severity in CHC patients.
  • HGF levels are insensitive to therapeutic changes and cannot be used to monitor the effectiveness of antiviral therapy in CHC.
