Summary

The largest study of closed conjunctival delayed adjustable suture techniques for strabismus correction shows that while 26% of patients needed adjustments, most had good outcomes. This method offers potential advantages over traditional techniques.

Background:

Adjustable suture techniques are used in strabismus surgery.
Delayed adjustable sutures offer intraoperative or postoperative adjustments.

Purpose of the Study:

To characterize outcomes of the largest patient series undergoing closed conjunctival delayed adjustable suture techniques.
Evaluate the efficacy and safety of this strabismus correction method.

Main Methods:

Multicenter retrospective review of 440 operations.
Patients aged 10-91 years, performed by five surgeons at four centers.

Main Results:

26% of patients required postoperative manipulation.
84% of manipulated patients had satisfactory cosmetic improvement or no diplopia in target gaze.

Transient complications were noted, but serious complications were rare.

Conclusions:

The closed conjunctival delayed adjustable suture technique is characterized in this large series.
This technique may offer significant advantages compared to traditional adjustable suture methods for strabismus correction.
