Summary

Confused elderly patients using bedside bars may cause implant failure after femur fracture surgery. This study identifies this risk and proposes an inexpensive solution to prevent implant dislocations.

The use of bedside bars by confused elderly patients is a potential cause of implant failure and dislocations.
Specific forces exerted by misusing bedside bars can compromise fracture fixation.
This mechanism represents an under-recognized source of early implant complications.

Implications:

Implementing fall precautions and patient/caregiver education is crucial.
Bedside equipment design may need reconsideration for vulnerable patient populations.
An inexpensive solution is proposed to mitigate the risk of implant complications in this patient group.
