Clozapine-induced sialorrhea (CIS) is a common side effect. Low-dose Amisulpride effectively treated CIS in a refractory schizophrenia patient, offering a new therapeutic option.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacology
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Clozapine is a vital antipsychotic for treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
- Clozapine use is linked to significant side effects, including sialorrhea.
- Existing treatments for clozapine-induced sialorrhea (CIS) have limitations and side effects.
Observation:
- A patient with schizophrenia refractory to treatment experienced significant sialorrhea due to clozapine.
- Conventional treatments for CIS were ineffective or poorly tolerated.
- Low-dose Amisulpride was administered to manage the clozapine-induced sialorrhea.
Findings:
- The patient exhibited a positive response to low-dose Amisulpride.
- Amisulpride effectively reduced clozapine-induced sialorrhea.
- This suggests Amisulpride as a potential treatment for CIS.
Implications:
- Low-dose Amisulpride may offer a novel and effective treatment for clozapine-induced sialorrhea.
- This finding could improve patient adherence and quality of life in schizophrenia management.
- Further research is warranted to explore Amisulpride's efficacy and safety in treating CIS.
