Summary

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a destructive condition affecting over a third of psoriasis patients. Early diagnosis and treatment with biologics, like tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists, can significantly improve outcomes and reduce disease burden.

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Dermatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a prevalent and destructive form of inflammatory arthritis.
  • PsA affects over one-third of individuals diagnosed with psoriasis.
  • Dermatologists play a crucial role in the early identification and management of PsA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the importance of early diagnosis of PsA by dermatologists.
  • To emphasize the benefits of prompt treatment for PsA.
  • To discuss the role of biological agents in managing PsA.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature on PsA diagnosis and treatment.
  • Analysis of the impact of early intervention strategies.
  • Evaluation of the efficacy of biological agents, specifically TNF-alpha antagonists.

Main Results:

  • Early diagnosis by dermatologists is feasible and critical for effective PsA management.
  • Prompt treatment, particularly with biological agents, can mitigate disease progression.
  • Tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists show significant promise in long-term PsA management.

Conclusions:

  • Early intervention in PsA, facilitated by dermatologists, can significantly reduce patient morbidity.
  • Effective treatment strategies, including biologics, improve quality of life for PsA patients.
  • Prompt management of PsA lessens the overall economic burden on patients and society.
