Exercise Stress Test

Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Intense exercise temporarily impairs executive functions like attention and cognitive flexibility. Performance recovers after exercise below the ventilatory threshold but remains reduced following exercise at or above it.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty participants completed 30 minutes of exercise at either ventilatory threshold (VT) or 75% of VT.
  • Executive control was assessed using the Contingent Continuous Performance Task (CPT) and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST).
  • Cognitive tests were administered pre-exercise, during exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 20 minutes post-exercise.

Main Results:

  • Executive control, measured by CPT and WCST performance, declined during both exercise conditions.
  • Following exercise at VT, performance on the CPT (false alarms) and WCST (total and perseverative errors) remained impaired.
  • Executive control performance returned to baseline levels 20 minutes after exercise below VT.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise-induced decrements in executive control support the transient hypofrontality theory.
  • Higher exercise intensity (at VT) leads to a more prolonged impairment of executive functions post-exercise.
  • The brain requires additional time to return to homeostasis after intense exercise, impacting cognitive recovery.
