Summary

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by surgery improves outcomes for hepatoblastoma (HB) patients. This study of 12 children showed that NACT and surgical resection led to successful outcomes with no major complications.

Background:

Hepatoblastoma (HB) treatment relies on neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and surgical resection.
Chemotherapy advancements have improved tumor response and resectability rates in HB.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the single-center experience with NACT and surgery for hepatoblastoma.
To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of NACT followed by surgical excision in pediatric HB patients.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 12 children with hepatoblastoma treated between January 1997 and July 2004.
All patients received NACT (cisplatin and doxorubicin) followed by surgical excision.
Analysis included patient characteristics, treatment, and long-term outcomes.

Main Results:

Nine out of 12 patients underwent hepatectomy (4 right, 4 left, 1 extended right).
All 9 resected cases achieved R0 resection without life-threatening complications.
All patients completed the planned 6 cycles of chemotherapy post-surgery.

Conclusions:

NACT followed by surgical resection is an effective treatment strategy for hepatoblastoma.
The combination of NACT and surgery offers a favorable prognosis for patients with resectable hepatoblastoma.
