Late-life depression (LLD) involves altered emotional processing, with patients showing different response times to emotional faces compared to healthy individuals. This suggests unique neurobiological underpinnings in LLD distinct from younger depression.

  • Eleven LLD patients and 11 healthy comparison subjects (HCs) participated.
  • Participants viewed faces with various emotional expressions (happy, sad, fearful, neutral).
  • Tasks included making nonaffective judgments and labeling facial expressions.

Main Results:

  • HCs exhibited longer response latencies for emotional vs. neutral faces.
  • LLD patients showed no difference in response latencies across emotions.
  • LLDs were less accurate in labeling neutral faces.

Conclusions:

  • LLD is associated with distinct alterations in emotional processing.
  • These findings differ from mood-congruent biases seen in younger depressed populations.
