Summary

Essential hypertension patients did not show increased endothelin production. Plasma endothelin levels correlated with blood pressure in hypertensives, but not in normotensives, suggesting normal endothelin metabolism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma endothelin immunoreactivity in different stages of essential hypertension.
  • To determine the correlation between endothelin levels and blood pressure control in hypertensive patients.
  • To assess potential alterations in endothelin production in essential hypertension.

Main Methods:

  • Measurement of plasma endothelin immunoreactivity in four groups: normal controls, mild hypertensives (untreated), moderate-to-severe hypertensives (treated, controlled BP), and moderate-to-severe hypertensives (treated, uncontrolled BP).
  • Assessed plasma concentrations of C-terminal and N-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide.
  • Statistical analysis to determine correlations between peptide levels and blood pressure.

Main Results:

  • Plasma endothelin immunoreactivity levels were similar across all four groups.
  • A positive correlation was observed between plasma endothelin levels and blood pressure in hypertensive patients, but not in normotensive individuals.
