Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Background:

  • Large cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) poses significant risks, including disfigurement, recurrence, and metastasis.
  • Factors influencing SCC tumor size at diagnosis remain largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors associated with SCC tumor size.
  • To evaluate the impact of diagnostic/treatment delays and patient/tumor characteristics on SCC size.

Main Methods:

  • A study of 308 patients with SCC treated at an Italian dermatologic referral center.
  • Data collection through medical record review and telephone interviews.
  • Multiple logistic regression analysis to determine factors associated with SCC size.

Main Results:

  • Tumors larger than 2 cm were associated with male gender, chronic lesions, and non-visible locations.
  • A delay exceeding 18 months in surgical removal significantly increased the likelihood of large invasive SCC (OR=4.18).
  • Tumors arising in chronic lesions showed a higher likelihood of being large invasive SCC (OR=6.42).

Conclusions:

  • Extended delays in SCC removal are linked to increased tumor size, particularly for invasive cases.
  • Early detection and prompt treatment are vital to prevent large SCCs and mitigate associated risks.
  • Physician and patient examinations should focus on chronic skin lesions and non-visible body sites.
