Hospitals-I01:28

Hospitals-I

Hospitals offer medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, along with accommodation while they recover. At the same time, they also provide outpatient, emergency, psychiatric, and rehabilitation services to meet various community needs. In addition to providing medical care, hospitals also act as hubs for medical research and training. Hospitals use clinical procedures and evidence-based practice standards to deliver patient care. To deliver safe and efficient care, a nurse must stay up...
Primary Healthcare Services01:30

Primary Healthcare Services

Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.

Secondary Healthcare System01:11

Secondary Healthcare System

Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Whatever...
Methods of reducing fever01:22

Methods of reducing fever

The signs and symptoms of fever include hot and dry skin, flushed face, thirst, muscle aches, anorexia, headache, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fatigue. Elevated body temperature is reduced using two methods: pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Proper identification and treatment of the root cause of a fever is of utmost importance.

Summary

Medical emergencies in Goa are primarily road traffic accidents and drowning, disproportionately affecting young males. Emergency services should focus on high-incidence areas like Salcette and Bardez to improve response for this demographic.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Goa faces a high incidence of medical emergencies, predominantly from road traffic accidents and drowning.
  • Accident rates have surpassed 4000 annually, with an expected 10% increase, highlighting a growing public health concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a cross-sectional survey of medical emergencies in Goa.
  • To identify and categorize the types of emergencies presenting to emergency departments.

Main Methods:

  • A stratified random sampling design was employed across three major government hospitals in Goa.
  • Emergency medical technicians recorded all presenting emergencies on specially designed data sheets.
  • Data analysis involved stratification and mapping of emergency types and origins.

Main Results:

  • GMC Hospital managed the majority of emergencies (62%), with accidents/assaults and fever being the most common (17% each).
  • Most emergencies were non-critical, with a 1% mortality rate.
  • Emergencies were concentrated in Salcette and Bardez, primarily affecting young males (19-45 years); males experienced more accidents, while females presented with pregnancy-related emergencies.

Conclusions:

  • Emergency services in Goa require targeted interventions for young males.
  • Increased resource allocation is recommended for Salcette (South Goa) and Bardez (North Goa) due to higher emergency concentrations.
