Extended resection for advanced rectal cancer in Ethiopian context, a case report

Complete resection is the most important prognostic factor in surgery for rectal cancer. In locally advanced rectal cancer, radical margins are sometimes difficult to obtain because of the close relationship to or growth in adjacent organs/structures. Such type of advanced tumors may require ebloc resection of the rectum, bladder, and/or internal genital organs (prostate/seminal vesicles or uterus, ovaries and/or vagina). Here, we present a case of advanced rectal cancer in a 45-year-old male patient who was successfully operated on by extended resection of rectum, bladder, and left ureter with urinary bladder reconstruction made using ileal conduit. Discussion of the case and literature review was also made.
