Background:

  • Traditional sampling pumps (TSPs) use constant flow rates, potentially leading to inaccurate exposure estimates.
  • Physiologic sampling pumps (PSPs) adjust sampling rates based on wearer's minute ventilation (V[combining dot above](E)).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of a new PSP against a TSP in a controlled laboratory setting.
  • To evaluate the accuracy of PSPs in estimating airborne contaminant exposure under varying conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Laboratory evaluation using an exposure chamber with 15 subjects performing step-tests.
  • Two exposure scenarios: one with V[combining dot above](E) correlated with contaminant concentration (r=0.93), and one uncorrelated (r=0.02).
  • Comparison of time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations measured by PSP and TSP.

Main Results:

  • In the correlated scenario, PSPs yielded higher TWA concentrations than TSPs (average ratio 1.18).
