Summary

Children's Oncology Group (COG) staging for pediatric ovarian tumors is not consistently applied but appears sufficient for all cases. Advanced disease was identified through visible findings and site-directed biopsies, not random sampling.

Background:

  • Pediatric ovarian malignancy lacks routine conventional staging due to absent preoperative indicators.
  • The Children's Oncology Group (COG) developed specific guidelines for germ cell tumors to improve staging accuracy for pediatric ovarian pathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the adherence to and applicability of COG guidelines in staging pediatric ovarian malignancies.
  • To determine if COG staging is sufficient for all types of pediatric ovarian cancers.

  • A 15.5-year retrospective review of operative ovarian masses was conducted at a single academic institution.
