Summary

Publication misrepresentation in ophthalmology residency applications is low, with foreign medical graduates more likely to list and misrepresent articles. Self-promotion on author lists was the most common issue found.

Background:

Applicant publication data is crucial for residency selection.
Assessing the accuracy of reported publications is essential for maintaining academic integrity.
Previous studies have highlighted publication misrepresentation in various medical specialties.

Purpose of the Study:

To quantify publication misrepresentation among ophthalmology residency applicants.
To compare misrepresentation rates in ophthalmology with other specialties.
To analyze differences in misrepresentation between US-trained and non-US-trained applicants.

Main Methods:

Reviewed 821 ophthalmology residency applications (2000-2004).
Identified and categorized instances of publication misrepresentation.
Compared publication listing and misrepresentation rates between US-trained and non-US-trained applicants.

Main Results:

1.9% of all applicants misrepresented publications; 8.1% of those listing publications did.
Foreign medical graduates were more likely to list (P=.008) and misrepresent (P=.01) articles.
Self-promotion on author lists (50%) was the most frequent misrepresentation.

Conclusions:

Ophthalmology exhibits a low rate of applicant publication misrepresentation.
Foreign medical graduates showed higher rates of listing and misrepresenting publications.
Residency directors should verify applicant publications by requesting copies.
