    Summary

A naturally occurring lymphoproliferative disease was found in Muscovy ducks. Reticuloendotheliosis virus antibodies were detected, suggesting a link to the observed mononuclear cell infiltrates in multiple organs.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Avian Diseases
    • Virology

    Background:

    • Lymphoproliferative diseases can affect domestic poultry, impacting flock health.
    • Muscovy ducks may be susceptible to naturally occurring viral infections.
    • Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) is an oncogenic avian retrovirus.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize a naturally occurring lymphoproliferative disease in a domestic flock of Muscovy ducks.
    • To investigate potential viral etiologies, specifically Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) and Marek's disease virus (MDV).

    Main Methods:

    • Necropsy and histopathological examination of affected Muscovy ducks.
    • Serological testing for antibodies against REV and MDV.

    Main Results:

    • Gross lesions were observed in the small intestine of one duck.
    • Microscopic lesions revealed mononuclear cell infiltrates in the liver, spleen, small intestine, peripheral nerves, and brain.
    • Antibodies to REV were detected in 4 out of 6 ducks.
    • All ducks tested lacked antibodies to MDV.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest a naturally occurring lymphoproliferative disease in Muscovy ducks.
    • The presence of REV antibodies indicates a potential association between REV infection and the observed pathology.
    • Further investigation is warranted to confirm REV as the causative agent.
