Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta.

Summary

Cesarean sections were common in pregnancies with fetal death, with previous C-sections, multiple gestation, and abruptio placentae increasing risk. Teenage pregnancy and misoprostol use were protective factors against C-sections in these cases.

Context:

Fetal death presents complex obstetric challenges.
Cesarean delivery is a significant intervention with associated risks.
Understanding factors influencing delivery mode in fetal death cases is crucial for maternal and infant care.

Purpose:

To identify sociodemographic, obstetric, and fetal characteristics associated with cesarean section in pregnancies complicated by fetal death.
To analyze risk and protective factors for cesarean delivery in a Brazilian maternity hospital.

Summary:

A cross-sectional study analyzed 258 cases of fetal death (≥20 weeks gestation) from 2005-2008.
Cesarean section was performed in 27.5% of cases.
Multivariate analysis revealed previous cesarean section, multiple gestation, hypertensive disorders, and abruptio placentae as risk factors, while teenage pregnancy, misoprostol use, and low birth weight were protective.
