Summary

Severe alopecia, a form of hair loss, can occur in patients with common variable immunodeficiency. This condition and associated vitiligo did not improve with immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

Background:

  • Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by low immunoglobulin levels and impaired B-cell function.
  • Alopecia and vitiligo are autoimmune conditions that can sometimes be associated with primary immunodeficiencies.

Observation:

  • Three patients with diagnosed CVID developed severe and irreversible alopecia.
  • One patient with CVID and alopecia also presented with extensive vitiligo.
  • A separate patient with CVID had vitiligo but no alopecia.

Findings:

  • Hair loss in CVID patients appeared after the diagnosis of immune deficiency.
  • Immunoglobulin replacement therapy, the standard treatment for CVID, did not impact the alopecia or vitiligo in these cases.
