Background:

Methadone maintenance (MM) is a common treatment for opiate dependence.
Clients often desire methadone abstinence but face challenges during detoxification.
Withdrawal symptoms can hinder successful detoxification attempts.

Purpose of the Study:

To present the outcomes of a client undergoing methadone detoxification using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
To explore the efficacy of ACT-based interventions in managing opiate withdrawal during detoxification.

Main Methods:

A 6-month program combining gradual methadone dose reduction with weekly individual ACT sessions.
Participant underwent a 1-month stabilization phase followed by a 5-month dose reduction period.
Urine drug screens were conducted twice weekly to monitor illicit drug use.

Main Results:

The participant successfully completed the methadone detoxification program.
Favorable drug use outcomes were observed throughout treatment and at one-year follow-up.
ACT facilitated the management of distress associated with opiate withdrawal.

Conclusions:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) shows promise as an adjunct to methadone detoxification.
Behavioral therapies focusing on acceptance of withdrawal distress may improve treatment outcomes for opiate dependence.
Innovative therapies like ACT can support clients seeking methadone abstinence.
