Aging significantly alters renal blood flow (BF) and blood volume (BV), with time-to-peak (TTP) and mean transit time (MTT) increasing. CT perfusion imaging can assess these age-related renal hemodynamic changes in vivo.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Nephrology
- Gerontology
Background:
- Aging is associated with physiological changes in organ function.
- Renal hemodynamics are crucial for kidney health and function.
- Understanding age-related changes in renal perfusion is important for clinical management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate changes in renal blood flow (BF) and blood volume (BV) parameters related to aging.
- To assess the correlation between aging and renal perfusion parameters using multislice spiral computed tomography (CT).
Main Methods:
- Prospective study involving 42 patients without obvious renal abnormalities.
- Renal perfusion scans performed using 16-slice spiral CT.
- Pearson correlation coefficient used to analyze the relationship between perfusion parameters and age.
Main Results:
- Blood flow (BF) and blood volume (BV) showed a negative correlation with age in both renal cortex and medulla.
- Time-to-peak (TTP) and mean transit time (MTT) demonstrated a positive correlation with age.
- BF, TTP, and MTT changes were statistically significant with age; BV correlation was not significant.
Conclusions:
- CT perfusion imaging is feasible for assessing in vivo renal hemodynamic changes associated with aging.
- Findings provide insights into age-related renal hemodynamics, aiding clinical work-up for elderly patients.
- Familiarity with these changes can assist in the management of aged patients.
