Background:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with altered cognitive functions.
  • Neural correlates of response monitoring, including event-related potentials (ERPs) like the error-related negativity (ERN), correct response negativity (CRN), and error positivity (Pe), are implicated in depression.
  • Previous research on ERPs in MDD has yielded inconsistent findings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between depression severity and neural correlates of response monitoring using ERPs.
  • To compare ERPs associated with error processing in unmedicated individuals with MDD and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • An arrow flanker task was administered to 22 unmedicated individuals with MDD and 22 healthy controls.
  • Event-related potentials (ERPs), including ERN, CRN, and Pe, were recorded.
  • The differentiation between ERPs on error and correct trials (DeltaERN, DeltaPe) was analyzed in relation to depression severity.

Main Results:

  • No significant overall differences in ERN or CRN were found between groups.
  • In the MDD group, greater depression severity correlated with an increased CRN and a reduced DeltaERN.
  • Individuals with MDD exhibited a reduced DeltaPe compared to healthy controls, indicating impaired differentiation between error and correct trial ERPs.

Conclusions:

  • Neural differentiation between correct and erroneous responses is diminished in individuals with severe depression.
  • These findings suggest that altered error monitoring and awareness, as reflected by ERPs, are associated with the severity of depressive symptoms.
