Summary

Thyroid carcinoma is significantly more common in solitary thyroid nodules (42.27%) than in multinodular goiters (0.25%). Papillary carcinoma is the most frequent type, predominantly affecting younger females.

Background:

Thyroid nodules are common, but distinguishing benign from malignant presentations is crucial.
Multi-nodular goiter and solitary thyroid nodules represent distinct clinical entities with varying malignant potential.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate and compare the incidence and characteristics of thyroid carcinoma in solitary thyroid nodules versus multi-nodular goiters.
To identify the specific types and demographic profiles of thyroid cancers in these two conditions.

Main Methods:

A case series study was conducted from January 1999 to January 2009.
Patients with solitary thyroid nodules and multi-nodular goiters were analyzed, with specific exclusion criteria applied.
Surgical interventions included hemithyroidectomy for solitary nodules and sub-total thyroidectomy for multi-nodular goiters, followed by histopathological examination.

Main Results:

Thyroid carcinoma was diagnosed in 42.27% of solitary thyroid nodules, contrasting sharply with a 0.25% incidence in multi-nodular goiters.
Papillary carcinoma was the most prevalent type (65.95%), frequently observed in females aged 12-30 years.
Other diagnosed conditions included thyroid adenoma, colloid goiter, thyroiditis, and multi-nodular goiter in solitary nodules.

Conclusions:

The frequency of thyroid carcinoma is substantially higher in solitary thyroid nodules compared to multi-nodular goiters.
Papillary carcinoma is the predominant subtype, particularly in younger female populations.
These findings underscore the importance of thorough evaluation for malignancy in solitary thyroid nodules.
