  • Collected red (660 nm) and IR (940 nm) PPG waveforms from 10 cardiac surgery patients using an esophageal probe.
  • Analyzed PPG waveforms using custom Mathematica algorithms.
  • Applied four time-domain (ArtSat, VenSat, ArtInstSat, VenInstSat) and four frequency-domain (RespDC, RespAC, Cardiac, Harmonic) algorithms.

Main Results:

  • Three algorithms (VenSat, VenInstSat, RespDC) demonstrated a significant difference compared to the conventional arterial saturation algorithm (ArtSat) (p < 0.0071).
  • These three algorithms successfully detected lower saturation blood.
  • The results suggest the potential for non-invasive venous oxygen saturation monitoring.

Conclusions:

  • Introduced novel algorithms for PPG analysis to estimate venous oxygen saturation.
  • VenSat, VenInstSat, and RespDC algorithms show capability in detecting lower saturation blood.
  • Future work will involve validating these algorithms against a gold standard, such as venous blood gas analysis.
