The placenta in the context of history and modern medical practice
1Department of Pathology and Reproductive Medicine, University of California, San Diego.
Abstract:
This is a brief summary of the development of our understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human placenta. The article also traces the origin of some of the commonly used terminology that pertains to the placenta, and it makes reference to the major discoveries made in the understanding of human placentation. The legal implications for the current need of placental examination are traced and recommendations are made for future studies that might be conducted. Finally, questions are raised how to begin gaining some understanding of the mechanisms guiding the evolution of common placental features.

Gonadal and Placental Hormones
In males, testosterone is the primary gonadal androgen. It plays a central role in the maturation of male reproductive organs — the penis and testes. Additionally, testosterone is instrumental in the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a deep voice as well as facial and pubic hair growth — and...
Physiological Barriers
The blood endothelial barrier is the most porous of these. It allows all small ionized, un-ionized, and lipophilic molecules to pass through the endothelial lining into the interstitial space...
Fetal Circulation
Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...

The Biology of Tissue Transplantation
The biology of tissue transplantation hinges on the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules. These molecules...
