This case report details a rare instance of intracranial aspergillosis affecting the lateral ventricle in a patient with schizophrenia. Prompt diagnosis and treatment led to a favorable outcome with no recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Mycology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Intracranial aspergillosis is a rare fungal infection, particularly within the lateral ventricles.
- Co-occurrence with schizophrenia has not been previously documented in medical literature.
Observation:
- A 39-year-old male with schizophrenia presented with rapidly declining consciousness.
- Cranial CT revealed right lateral ventricular dilatation, mass effect, and midline shift.
Findings:
- Emergency endoscopic ventriculostomy was performed, resecting a mass identified as Aspergillus.
- Postoperative treatment included external ventricular drainage and antifungal therapy.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering opportunistic infections like aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients, even with atypical presentations.
- Successful management of intracranial aspergillosis in a schizophrenic patient suggests potential treatment pathways for similar rare cases.
