Background:

  • Fetuin-A, a liver-secreted protein, is elevated in insulin resistance and predicts type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate Fetuin-A concentrations in morbidly obese patients before and after gastric bypass surgery.
  • To assess the impact of weight loss on Fetuin-A levels and insulin resistance.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional and 16-month longitudinal study design.
  • Inclusion of 75 morbidly obese patients and 38 healthy controls.
  • Measurements included blood pressure, routine labs, oral glucose tolerance tests, and HOMA for insulin resistance.
