Summary

Patients with type 2 diabetes and sudomotor dysfunction have higher foot temperatures. Increased foot skin temperature correlates with the severity of sudomotor dysfunction, indicating a potential diagnostic marker.

Background:

  • Diabetic neuropathy is associated with increased foot skin temperature.
  • Sudomotor dysfunction is a common complication in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between foot temperature and sudomotor dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

Main Methods:

  • Compared foot skin temperature in 51 patients without sudomotor dysfunction (Group A) and 52 patients with sudomotor dysfunction (Group B).
  • Defined sudomotor dysfunction by delayed Neuropad color change (>600 s).
  • Measured foot skin temperature using an infrared thermometer on the plantar aspect.

Main Results:

  • Patients with sudomotor dysfunction (Group B) exhibited significantly higher foot temperatures on both feet compared to those without (Group A).
  • A significant positive correlation was found between the time for complete Neuropad color change and foot skin temperature in both feet.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated foot skin temperature is significantly associated with sudomotor dysfunction in type 2 diabetes.
  • Foot temperature serves as a potential indicator of sudomotor dysfunction severity in diabetic patients.
