Data Validation01:03

Data Validation

Data validation is an essential part of a comprehensive assessment. Validation is confirming or verifying and opening the door to gathering more assessment data as it clarifies vague or unclear data. The process of checking and verifying the collected information is called data validation. The primary purpose of data validation is to ensure data is as free from error, bias, and misinterpretation as possible.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics and Kinesiology
  • Medical Imaging and Digital Health

Background:

  • Postural assessment software (PAS/SAPO) is a publicly available tool for evaluating posture.
  • Despite its utility, validation studies for PAS/SAPO have been limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the accuracy of PAS/SAPO in measuring corporal angles and distances.
  • To determine the inter- and intra-rater reliability of the PAS/SAPO tool.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved 88 images from 22 subjects, with assessments performed twice by 5 blinded raters.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to evaluate reliability.
  • Software accuracy was tested using an inanimate object with pre-defined parameters.

Main Results:

  • Inter-rater reliability was excellent for 41% and very good for 35% of variables.
  • Intra-rater reliability showed excellent results for 44.8% and very good for 23.5% of measurements.
  • Mean error for angular measurements was 0.11 degrees; for distances, it was 1.8 mm.

Conclusions:

  • PAS/SAPO is accurate for measuring corporal angles and distances.
  • The software is a reliable tool for postural assessment.
  • Younger raters with computer proficiency showed improved accuracy, suggesting experience influences outcomes.
