Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Functional brain imaging reveals the "pain matrix," a network of brain regions involved in pain perception. Dysfunctional interactions between ascending and descending pain systems may contribute to chronic pain.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Functional brain imaging noninvasively visualizes neuronal activity and metabolic changes.
  • It has significantly advanced understanding of human central nervous system (CNS) pain mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an overview of functional imaging in pain research.
  • Highlighting principles, applications, key findings, and recent advances.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing functional brain imaging techniques.
  • Employing experimental paradigms in healthy volunteers and patients.

Main Results:

  • Identified the
  • pain matrix,
  • a dynamic network of activated cortical and subcortical regions during acute pain.

Conclusions:

  • The
  • pain matrix
  • involves somatosensory cortices, insula, cingulate cortex, prefrontal areas, amygdala, thalamus, brainstem, and cerebellum.
  • Context-dependent modulations and descending pain pathways influence pain perception.
  • Dysfunctional interactions between pain systems may underlie chronic pain states.
