Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Physics

Background:

  • Accurate attenuation correction is crucial for quantitative analysis in Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
  • Small-volume PET systems present unique challenges for attenuation correction due to limited data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an accurate attenuation correction method for a small-volume 3D PET system.
  • To assess the impact of the correction on image resolution and noise.

Main Methods:

  • A 3D attenuation image was reconstructed from 2D transmission scan slices.
  • Emission data were corrected for attenuation during the backprojection step using reprojection.
  • A backproject-then-filter reconstruction technique was employed.

Main Results:

  • The developed method produced accurate attenuation-corrected emission images.
  • No degradation in image resolution (3 mm) was observed.
  • The correction had minimal impact on image noise, despite statistical limitations in attenuation images.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed attenuation correction method is effective for small-volume 3D PET systems.
  • The technique successfully restores spatial invariance, enabling valid deconvolution and undistorted images.
  • This method offers accurate quantitative imaging without compromising image quality.
