Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in Karachi presented younger with larger tumors, often linked to chronic hepatitis B and C. Early HCC surveillance is crucial for timely detection and treatment.

Background:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant global health concern.
  • Understanding the clinico-pathological and radiological features of HCC is essential for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To delineate the clinico-pathological and radiological characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • To identify key risk factors and disease presentation patterns in a Pakistani population.

Main Methods:

  • A case series study was conducted at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi.
  • Diagnosis of HCC was confirmed through clinical, biochemical, ultrasonographic, and histopathologic evaluations.
  • Patients were excluded if they had metastatic liver cancer, fibrolamellar carcinoma, or benign tumors.

Main Results:

  • Eighty-two patients (58 males, 24 females) with HCC were analyzed.
  • The mean age was 56.24 years, with right hypochondrial pain as the most common symptom.
  • Hepatitis C (53.7%) and Hepatitis B (31.7%) were prevalent, with 12.2% negative for both markers.

Conclusions:

  • HCC presentation in this cohort was younger than in Western countries, with a high proportion of non-resectable tumors.
  • Chronic Hepatitis C and B are major contributing factors to HCC development.
  • Vigorous surveillance for HCC is recommended in patients with chronic Hepatitis C and B to enable early detection of potentially resectable disease.
