Summary

Self-ligating (SL) and conventionally ligated (CL) brackets showed no significant differences in efficiency for anterior alignment or space closure during 20 weeks of orthodontic treatment. Ligation technique is one of many factors influencing treatment outcomes.

Background:

Self-ligating (SL) and conventionally ligated (CL) brackets are widely used in orthodontic treatments.
Comparing the efficiency of different bracket types is crucial for optimizing treatment protocols.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the efficiency of SL and CL brackets.
To evaluate anterior alignment and extraction space closure during the initial 20 weeks of treatment.

Main Methods:

A comparative study involving 50 patients undergoing premolar extraction.
Utilized 0.022 x 0.028-in slot brackets (SL Damon 3MX vs. CL Victory Series/Mini-Diamond).
Evaluated models at pretreatment (T0), 10 weeks (T1), and 20 weeks (T2) for alignment, space closure, and arch dimensions.

Main Results:

No significant differences in irregularity scores between SL and CL groups at 20 weeks.
No significant differences in passive extraction space closure between SL and CL groups.
Similar changes in arch dimensions observed, irrespective of bracket type.

Conclusions:

SL brackets demonstrated no superior efficiency compared to CL brackets in anterior alignment or space closure within the first 20 weeks.
Ligation technique is a single factor among many influencing orthodontic treatment efficiency.
Archwire design may play a more significant role in arch dimension changes than bracket type.
