Insights
Severe growth retardation in a boy was linked to pituitary stalk transection. Hormone replacement therapy, including thyroid hormone and growth hormone, successfully corrected the condition, enabling catch-up growth.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Developmental Biology
- Clinical Case Study
Background:
- Severe growth retardation can significantly impact a child's development.
- Congenital pituitary stalk abnormalities can lead to hormonal deficiencies.
- Microphallus and ectopic testes are potential indicators of endocrine dysfunction.
Abstract:
The authors report a case of severe growth retardation in a 4 year-old boy. A microphallus and ectopic testis located at the inguinal point were present in the neonatal period. A panhypopituitarism was related to a transection of the pituitary stalk. Treatment with thyroid hormone and growth hormone allowed excellent catch up of growth.
